Riding into the weekend like a woman at the head of a procession! Vingt Ans de Cyclisme Pratique by Herbert Duncan was published in Paris in 1898. In the evolution of the bicycle portrayed on the cover, women on bicycles lead the procession of technology into the future. Inspired by @Katjungnickel's Bikes and Bloomers I went looking for the Melbourne women who registered patents for new and improved cycling clothing in the 1890s using resources from @library_vic and @nationallibraryaus It's astonishing, that some of them were addressing issues that manufacturers of women's cycling clothes still grapple with today. Choosing #whatnottowear was a political act for women riders in the 1890s. Ride in a skirt and support the status quo? Ride in rational dress and be a visible agent for change? Practical cycling clothes for women have changed a lot over the years. Or have they? In 1898 a cyclometer was a new fangled toy for cyclists that brought another dimension to obsessing about how far you’d ridden.
